Nickel allergies are quite common, causing reactions such as itching, redness, and swelling when the skin comes into contact with nickel. While many types of jewelry contain nickel, not all of them are created equal. Our gold stainless steel jewelry is crafted from 316 and 304 stainless steel, which do contain nickel. However, these grades are much less likely to cause allergic reactions. This is because the nickel in 316 and 304 stainless steel is tightly bound within the alloy and protected by a thin layer of chromium oxide, which prevents nickel ions from being released and coming into contact with the skin.
